sailormac: WTF Wednedsay

It's the middle of the week, and that means it's time for those little questions that don't quite rate a top-level post, but you're pretty darn curious about otherwise.

*late, but I'm not going to be here next Wednesday, so I'll try now...*

Where and when did the term "bb" for "baby" start coming into use? The first time I ever saw it was in a Gaspard Ulliel fan community (it overlapped heavily with Twilight fandom), and months later, I got into Fueled by Ramen band fandom and saw "bb" being used in that fandom, too. What is it about Gaspard Ulliel, Twilight, and FBR that has people saying "bb," besides the fact that there is some overlap between the people who like them? I haven't ever seen "bb" in any of my other fandoms; are there others that do it? It's such a tiny word, but all of a sudden I got desperately curious about it. :p

eta: A friend of mine just suggested that it might have started in ONTD, which would make sense to me considering how they're the mother of fandom overlap. Anyone know if she's right?

I don't know... When I first saw it, I thought of how my parents used to pronounce baby using (what I assume to be) Cantonese pinyin. "bb" is *exactly* how it would sound, though I do mentally add certain tones to it when I read it.

I know that in Nodame Cantabile, the protagonist is called "Bebe-chan" at some point-- though the pronunciation is a little different.

... Sorry for bombarding you with guesses as to its origins and nothing concrete, hahah...

I'm not involved in those fandoms at all, but I hear it TONS among roleplayers - most of the RPers I know are of the Kingdom Hearts variety, so I couldn't paint any kind of balanced picture, but... yeah. I didn't hear it at all before I got into RP, though.
